The Parliamentary Committee on the Judiciary supported today the proposals for amendments to the laws relating to election regulations and appointed the Chairman of the Committee, Uglješa Mrdić, to be the rapporteur on those laws at the session of the Serbian Parliament.
This refers to the supplements to the Law on the Election of the President of the Republic, as well as amendments and supplements to the Law on the Election of Members of Parliament, the Law on Local Elections, and the Law on the Constitutional Court. Member of Parliament from the Serbia Center, Verica Milanović, said that she sees that none of the remarks from the participants of the public hearings were included or respected, that the process was expedited and that the public hearings were scheduled hastily, and that there will be no improvement of the electoral process with these amendments.
Member of Parliament from the People’s Movement of Serbia, Aleksandar Ivanović, said that the most sensible thing is to withdraw that set of laws and start the procedure in a way that makes sense, and pointed out that the members of the Committee know the difference between a public debate and a public hearing and that they tendentiously chose the latter option for these laws.

He added that passing laws outside the regular procedure has a cost and that the price for the amendments to the judicial laws is clear—that the citizens of Serbia are deprived of 1.5 billion euros from the European Union’s Growth Plan for the Western Balkans.
The Chairman of the Committee and Member of Parliament from the ruling Serbian Progressive Party, Uglješa Mrdić, responded to him by saying that it is the right of the opposition to rejoice at being punished and replied to Ivanović’s allegations regarding the amendments to the judicial laws, which were not the topic of the committee.
Mrdić said that he had a meeting with representatives of the Venice Commission, that the Commission had sent an opinion, and that a Working Group for the amendment of judicial laws had been formed.
