NUMBER OF CASES RISING IN NORTH MACEDONIA: 58 people infected with West Nile virus, eight have died!

The Institute of Public Health of North Macedonia announced that a total of 58 people infected with West Nile virus and eight deaths have been registered in that country.

According to the weekly epidemiological report on West Nile fever in North Macedonia in 2026, as of September 8, out of the total number of registered cases, 54 are classified as confirmed and four as probable.

It is added that 55 people suffering from West Nile fever are from Skopje, while one each is from Veles, Kumanovo and the city of Sveti Nikole, in the east of the country.

“Fifty-seven autochthonous cases and one case with a history of travel to Greece have been registered, but the incubation period also includes time spent in Macedonia,” the report states.

By gender, 46 of those infected are men and 12 are women. Most of them are over the age of 60 – 47 people, seven are between 50 and 59 years old, one person is between 30 and 39 years old, and three are between 20 and 29 years old.

Symptoms in the first diagnosed case of West Nile virus infection in 2026 in North Macedonia appeared on May 12.
