The most numerous, and therefore the largest traditional event of the Serbian diaspora in North America, Srbijada, begins today and will last until Sunday, with the venue being the small town of Portage, in the state of Indiana.

The host of this year’s Srbijada, FK Republika Srpska, has announced the participation of teams from across the United States and Canada, as well as 22 young footballers from OFK DIF Kosovska Mitrovica as special guests. It will be their first time coming to the USA, where they will compete for victory in the tournament, but a special program will also be organized for them, giving them the opportunity to explore Chicago and its surroundings, visit Serbian churches and monasteries, and socialize with their peers from our community.

The football tournament matches in all categories, from the youngest players to veterans, will be played at the Indiana Elite Soccer Complex (2945 Samuelson Rd, Portage, IN 46368).

Srbijada has a tradition spanning 33 years, with the inaugural event held way back in 1993 in Windsor, Canada.

From then until today, Srbijada has grown from a single football tournament into the most important traditional gathering of Serbs on the North American continent.

This year’s tournament is organized in several categories, from the main competitive Open category, through the +30, +40 and +50 veterans’ categories, while the youngest participants will also compete in several age groups.

The sporting program will also be complemented by a cultural and entertainment program, so over the weekend visitors and participants will be able to enjoy performances by local bands and singers, while special parties will also be organized.

Jasmina Ilić, Saša Minić and Čedo Kabić have been announced, along with the Neša Veljković Orchestra, while the official after-party event on Sunday, hosted by the ever-present DJ Spaz, will be held at the “Buddy & Pal’s” club in Schererville.

Several thousand footballers, as well as fans from all parts of the United States and Canada, are expected to attend.
