U.S. President Donald Trump said he would offer every adult American a $5,000 payment if Republicans win both chambers of Congress in the elections in November – a plan that would cost more than $1 trillion.
The controversial proposal was made in a speech at the first Republican Party convention held midway through a U.S. presidential term.
He did not provide details on how the plan would work or where the money would come from – he only said that the money would have to be spent in the U.S.
“If Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, I will issue a $5,000 dividend to every adult citizen. We don’t want you going to Canada to spend the money. We don’t want you going to China or Germany. You have to spend the money in the United States,” Trump stressed.
Democrats quickly dismissed it as an “empty promise”, while others are questioning whether such a promise is legal.
There are nearly 270 million adult Americans, meaning that a $5,000 payment would cost the U.S. government around $1.3 trillion.
Many are questioning whether Trump’s plan is possible – particularly as prices continue to rise in the U.S., partly as a result of the consequences of the war that the U.S. and Israel began with Iran in February.
The U.S. president warned his supporters on Wednesday that the war would not end until after the elections and that oil prices would not fall until then.
This is not the first time Trump has promised such payments – he previously proposed $2,000 checks to be funded by tariff revenue, the BBC reports.
