In a joint operation by the Montenegrin police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Iranian Revolutionary Guard member Amir Barati (39) was arrested. The United States accuses him of carrying out cyberattacks that caused $3.4 billion in damage to U.S. infrastructure, the Police Directorate announced.
“Officers of the Criminal Police Sector – NCB Interpol Podgorica, the FAST team for international targeted searches, in cooperation with officers of the Kotor Security Department, acting on a direct arrest request issued by the competent authorities of the United States and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), located and today arrested A.B. (39), a citizen of Turkey and Iran, a high-profile target wanted for cybercrime and organized crime offenses, in order to secure his presence in criminal proceedings being conducted against him in the United States before the New York Supreme Court on multiple charges,” the Police Directorate said in a statement, as reported by Vijesti.
They state that he has been charged with conspiracy to commit computer fraud and hacking, as well as identity theft:
“Specifically, from 2013 onward, as an associate of a legal entity based in Iran, he carried out large-scale cyberattacks against the infrastructure of the United States, targeting more than 150 universities across the country and causing damage estimated at more than $3.4 billion. The stolen data, as well as access to compromised university accounts, were used for the benefit of the IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) and other Iranian users, including universities based in Iran.”
“A.B. will be brought before the investigating judge of the High Court in Podgorica within the legally prescribed period for further proceedings regarding his extradition to the competent authorities of the United States,” the statement said.
The Police Directorate also recalled that, over the past three years, a total of seven individuals wanted by the FBI and the judicial authorities of the United States have been located and arrested in Montenegro.
