The Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas in Lyons, one of the important gathering places for the Serbian community in the greater Chicagoarea, is once again continuing its programs aimed at preserving the Serbian language, culture, faith and traditions.
St. Nicholas Church has for years represented much more than a place of worship. It is a space where families gather, cultural and educational programs are organized, the Serbian language and customs are preserved, and connections are built between younger generations and the heritage of their parents and ancestors.
Special attention will once again be devoted to the youngest members of the community. Enrollment in the Serbian language school begins on August 21, and classes are free for all children who wish to learn and improve their Serbian.
The church is calling on parents to take advantage of this opportunity and enroll their children in the classes, emphasizing that preserving the language is one of the most important ways for children born and raised in the United States to remain connected to their Serbian heritage and family roots.
The Serbian language school is not simply a place where children learn letters, grammar and proper expression. Through the language, children learn about the history, culture, customs and traditions of their people, while also forming new friendships with peers who share similar family and cultural backgrounds.
Joint prayer and blessing for students and pupils
Ahead of the beginning of the new school year, a special spiritual event for children, pupils and students will also be held at St. Nicholas Church.
A joint prayer and blessing for all children, pupils and students will take place on August 23, following the Divine Liturgy.
It will be an opportunity for children and their families to pray together for a successful, peaceful and blessed new school year, while also reaffirming the importance of unity and mutual support within the Serbian community.
Following the prayer and blessing, children, parents and parishioners will gather for fellowship. The church is calling on families to attend in large numbers and make the beginning of the new school year more than simply a return to school obligations—it will be an opportunity to meet, socialize and gather around the church and community.
That is precisely the special value of programs such as these. From an early age, children learn that the Serbian language, faith and traditions are not merely part of their family’s past, but a living part of their identity. Through community, education and faith, this heritage has an opportunity to be passed on to generations growing up far from the homeland of their ancestors.
St. Nicholas Church in Lyons is therefore once again continuing to serve as a place where customs are preserved, the language is nurtured and generations come together—with the goal of ensuring that Serbian culture and traditions remain a living part of the Serbian community’s life in America.
