A new protest was held in Užice, but there were slightly fewer citizens tonight than before the fulfillment of the Užice residents’ demands that all detained individuals be released and allowed to defend themselves from liberty. This happened today, after yesterday’s large protest in the city.

At tonight’s protest, five of the seven citizens released this morning spoke.

Student Pavle Cicvarić thanked Užice residents for their fight

“I am very emotional now as I speak here. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone, all Užice women and men, and all the people who came from all over Serbia to support not only me but also my comrades. But not only us, but also the fight for freedom and the fight for justice, to win the elections and to fight for a just country,” Cicvarić said.

He also reminded that many people are still in prison. “We must continue to support them, to raise our voice, not to lower the tensions. The only hope for a person behind bars is to know that people have not forgotten him and that the injustice done to them is being talked about,” he said.

He also points out that he noticed, while following N1 and Nova broadcasts from prison, that “after a long time, differences between various social groups were finally overcome.”

“When you are in detention, no one asks you if you are a councilor, a politician, an activist, a student, a professor, a citizen – for them you are a rabid dog unworthy of freedom. If they see us as rabid dogs – we have no reason to divide ourselves but to understand that every person is needed in this fight,” he added. “Against this criminal regime of Aleksandar Vučić, our only option is to unite, all stand together and not look at who is on which side, who is left, who is right. But together to break the criminal regime that arrested the people around us. To victory,” he concluded.

Lawyer Radovan Novaković: They thought they would humiliate us with arrest

The last to take the stage in Užice was councilor and lawyer Radovan Novaković, who was released from detention this morning. He told his fellow citizens that when violence becomes law, then every resistance is justified.

“They thought they would humiliate us with arrest, they thought we would be afraid of their balaclavas and their batons. We, dear fellow citizens, were escorted by faceless people, ninjas with balaclavas who were ashamed to show their own faces. They thought they would decapitate the protests and discourage the people from taking to the streets. However, they forgot one thing, we are not any leaders of the protests because these protests have no leader. This is a protest of the people, but not just any people, this is a protest of Užice residents, and Užice residents are not people who will tolerate injustice. The people in Užice and the people in Serbia yearn for justice.”

Novaković also stated that he believes the time of justice is coming soon, as well as the time when all those responsible will be held accountable, and that along with justice comes lustration.

“A ban is coming for all those who are involved in politics today, who are shaming us and who are making criminal decisions in our name – a ban for them to be involved in politics. If we don’t do that, some new Vučićs, Dačićs, their children and grandchildren will come. To all who have voted for SNS, SPS and their coalition partners so far, I have one question – did you vote for what you saw that night? Did you vote for the gendarmerie to brutalize us? I call on them to stop supporting Aleksandar Vučić, and I call on those who are councilors to leave the ranks of SNS and coalition partners, because this might be the last train when that will be offered to them,” Novaković emphasized. The lawyer stated that all who violated the law will end up where they sent them, that is, in prison, only for a longer time than the detained citizens of Užice.

Radovanović: Every whistle gave us strength

Marko Radovanović, one of the seven Užice residents who were released today, addressed the gathering and thanked everyone.

“Every whistle and every vuvuzela in moments when we were mentally breaking, gave us the strength that we are on the right side and that we are fighting for the right thing,” he said. After the address, the gathered crowd began what they called a “freedom walk,” which will conclude tonight’s protest. There will be no highway blockade tonight.
