Organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in Canada with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Serbia, a ceremony was held at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa to mark two significant anniversaries — 85 years of diplomatic relations between Serbia and Canada and 170 years since the birth of Nikola Tesla.
The program of the ceremony, titled “Inexhaustible Light”, was dedicated to the promotion of the cultural, scientific, and innovative heritage of the Republic of Serbia, with a special focus on the life and work of Nikola Tesla. Within the exhibition space, archival material dedicated to the jubilee of diplomatic relations between Serbia and Canada was also presented, testifying to the long-standing friendship, cooperation, and historical ties between the two countries.
The ceremony was opened with the singing of the national anthems of the Republic of Serbia and Canada, performed by the choir of the Church of the Holy Archdeacon Stefan from Ottawa.
The attendees were addressed by the Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia to Canada, Stefan Tomašević, the Director General for the Arctic, Eurasia, and Europe at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Canada, Gallit Dobner, as well as the Artistic Director of the National Gallery of Canada, Serge Belet.

In cooperation with the Nikola Tesla Museum from Belgrade, a documentary film about the great Serbian scientist was shown, while the installations and reproductions of Tesla’s patents and inventions attracted special attention from the guests. These were provided by Veroslav Đorđević (“Tesla Coil – Plasma Ball”, Nikola Tesla Education Corporation), Dragan Račić (“Tesla’s Egg”, Tesla Energy Institute Proposal), as well as Borislav Živković, the founder and director of the long-running Tesla Festival in Niagara.
The cultural and artistic program was completed by the performance of the Gusle Association “Filip Višnjić” from Kitchener, featuring a gusle performance by Dragan Vladičić, an exhibition of works by Marina Gavanski Zisis, Ljubomir Ivanković, and Miodrag Došlo, as well as a clothing review inspired by Tesla’s creativity and the history of diplomatic relations between Serbia and Canada, created based on the motifs of the academic painter M. Gavanski Zisis. The “Balkan Harmony Band” was in charge of the musical part of the program.
The ceremony once again confirmed the strong friendly and cultural ties between Serbia and Canada, alongside the promotion of the re-establishment of the direct flight line Belgrade–Toronto and the presentation of the specialized world exhibition EXPO 2027 in Belgrade.
