The defense of the first president of Republika Srpska, Radovan Karadžić, intends to submit a request to the Hague Mechanism for Karadžić to be transferred from the British prison to the Hague prison.
Lawyer Goran Petronijević, a member of the defense team, tells “Novosti” that he does not want to speculate on the date of sending this request, but that it will be sent “when the conditions are met.”
Petronijević says that no one has seen Karadžić for five years now and that his health condition is not good, while in the prison on the Isle of Wight they are denying him medical care and violating his human rights.
“Karadžić’s health condition is periodically better, but that is by no means an improvement, but rather a temporary halt in the tendency of deterioration,” the lawyer explained. “Karadžić does not have good conditions in the British prison on the Isle of Wight, in fact, he has very poor medical care, and he is a chronic patient. We are fighting as much as we can. If this matter related to General Ratko Mladić is resolved, we would at least like to have Karadžić returned to The Hague, if nothing else.”
In the prison on the Isle of Wight, which has a reputation as one of the worst correctional institutions in Great Britain and does not meet numerous conditions stipulated by standards in most European countries, the first president of Republika Srpska has been serving his sentence since May 2021.
Lawyer Petronijević says that conditions in the Hague detention unit are somewhat better than in other prisons such as the British ones.
“The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, which is the legal successor to the Hague Tribunal, is competent for the serving, that is, the monitoring of the serving of prison sentences of the Hague convicts. They decide on that and we will address them,” Petronijević said.

He reminded that the Minister of Justice of Serbia, Nenad Vujić, also recently, in direct contact with the President of the Mechanism, Graciela Gatti Santana, drew attention to the fact that members of Karadžić’s family can neither obtain a British visa nor visit him in detention.
“No one has seen him for five years. That is terrible! Therefore, he was not taken to serve a sentence, but into captivity. And on top of that, he is being denied health care. If Karadžić were in The Hague, at least his family could visit him. It is simply incredible the way the rights belonging to him are not only being violated, but completely eliminated,” Petronijević emphasized, reminding that even a person deprived of liberty, who is serving a sentence, has their own prison rights.
According to Petronijević, they are constantly playing petty tricks on Karadžić in the British prison, ranging from not giving him a normal light bulb, punishing him by taking away his pillow or chair for a while, to the point where he cannot contact his family.
“Those are things that are inappropriate for the 21st century,” Petronijević said.
