U.S. President Donald Trump stated yesterday that the European Union’s proposal for a full mutual lifting of tariffs on industrial goods, including automobiles, is not sufficient for lifting the newly imposed U.S. tariffs on EU exports.

“No, that’s not enough. The European Union has treated us very, very badly,” Trump said in response to a question at the White House regarding the proposal announced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Last week, Trump announced an increase in tariffs on goods from many countries around the world, raising tariffs on EU products to 20 percent.

This measure is set to take effect on Wednesday, April 9.

He asserted that the trade deficit the U.S. has with the EU will “quickly disappear,” expecting that European countries will increase their purchases of American energy resources.

“They need to buy energy and commit to buying up to the equivalent amount,” Trump said, referring to the amount equivalent to the U.S. trade deficit with the EU.

The European Union (EU) offered the U.S. a complete and reciprocal removal of tariffs on industrial products, von der Leyen said yesterday in an attempt to avoid a trade war.

“We proposed zero tariffs on industrial goods. Europe is always ready to make a good deal with the U.S.,” Ursula von der Leyen stated at a press conference.

The European Commission President also warned that the EU is prepared to respond with countermeasures and defend its interests in the face of Trump’s trade offensive.
