Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says four military personnel have been killed and dozens of others seriously injured in a fire at a military base in Alberta, describing it as one of the worst peacetime tragedies for the Canadian military on home soil.
Fire crews responded last night as strong winds spread the flames beyond the Canadian military base “Wainwright” and into the surrounding rural area. The Canadian military says there is no indication that the incident is related to terrorism, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation, the Associated Press reports.
Speaking in a televised address, Carney said the families of those killed had been notified and that the situation was still developing.
He added that the soldiers who were killed and injured were participating in military training when the fire broke out.
Flags have been lowered to half-mast on federal buildings across the country in honor of those affected by the tragedy, Carney added.
He stated that Carney said the tragic incident had directly affected reservists and soldiers from Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, one of the country’s best-known military regiments.
Personnel had arrived from bases across the country for training at “Wainwright.”
It was not immediately clear exactly how many people had been injured. Carney said the wounded were being treated in Wainwright, Edmonton, Red Deer, and Calgary.
A doctor at a hospital in Edmonton, 180 kilometers to the northwest, told Canada’s national broadcaster that patients had been taken to hospitals throughout the city because medical facilities around the base had become “completely overwhelmed” by the number of people requiring care.
