More than 300 membership cards have been returned to the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) in Čačak in recent months, claims Vesna Jerotić of the “Let’s Wake Up Čačak” Citizens’ Group. Speaking to TV Nova, she said the party had allegedly intended to destroy the returned cards before the elections, but one of its members handed them over to the citizens’ group. Jerotić believes the mass return of membership cards may be one of the reasons why the SNS, according to unofficial information, is having difficulty filling the expanded composition of polling station boards.

On the final day, there has been talk in Čačak that the Serbian Progressive Party has been unable to fill the expanded composition of polling station boards and that it allegedly offered citizens money to join those boards, a TV Nova reporter said. The City Electoral Commission has not yet officially confirmed whether the party has managed to fill its quota in the meantime. However, it is noteworthy that the SNS delegated two people with criminal convictions to the commission itself, TV Nova reporter Nebojša Jovanović reports.

Vesna Jerotić of the “Let’s Wake Up Čačak” Citizens’ Group says one reason for the local SNS’s pre-election difficulties could be that its members have been returning their membership cards in large numbers in recent months.

“Perhaps one of the reasons is precisely that membership cards have been returned to the City Board of the Serbian Progressive Party in Čačak in large numbers in recent months. These are all the membership cards that have been returned to the SNS City Board in Čačak over the past few months. They say that returning a membership card can be symbolic, but it can also be political. It is symbolic because you are breaking ties with a party you belonged to until recently and with the policies it pursues. Politically, it reflects disagreement with the moral, ethical, and legal standards that a party promises its members it will uphold,” she explained.

She recalled statements made by Aleksandar Vučić during the campaign, when he said that party membership cards would no longer be required to get a job and that anyone demanding one would be held accountable.

“Perhaps these members also believed the jingles from their election campaign, when the person at the top of their list says, ‘You will no longer need a membership card; nobody is allowed to ask you for a party membership card in order to hire you,’ and says that they will be held accountable. That is how their campaign jingle is worded, so perhaps they believed that nobody would really need a membership card anymore and that they would be able to find jobs without one,” Jerotić said.

According to her, after 14 years in power, the Serbian Progressive Party has managed to expose itself in the eyes of its own members.

“That is precisely what returning these membership cards represents. There have been countless scandals. We only need to look back at the past week, without even going back 14 years and listing Jovanjica, the railway station canopy collapse, and Konjuh,” she said.

More than 300 membership cards have been returned to the Serbian Progressive Party, bearing the signatures of Tomislav Nikolić, Aleksandar Vučić, and Miloš Vučević. The party allegedly wanted to destroy them before the elections, but one of its members delivered them to the “Let’s Wake Up Čačak” Citizens’ Group.

“They say that returning party membership cards in front of the media is popular in our Balkan region, so that everyone can see it. This gives the symbolic act greater significance, and this is probably a message intended to be seen in the media. That way, the symbolic break becomes official and, consequently, more significant,” the TV Nova interviewee concluded.
