Young Serbian basketball player Viktor Mikić has become an NCAA champion.
The former Partizan center is part of the championship-winning Florida team, which last night defeated Houston in a dramatic final to claim one of the most prestigious titles in America.
To be fair, the talented Serbian did not play a significant role in the Gators’ championship run.
Coach Todd Golden rarely gave him opportunities. He had symbolic minutes in four games and has not played for Florida since November. Nevertheless, he will go down as one of the players who managed to win the most important trophy in college basketball.
Viktor (19) came up through Belgrade’s Partizan. In 2021, he became the youngest professional in the club’s history, and in the 2023/24 season, coach Željko Obradović included him in the final stages of the Radivoj Korać Cup in Niš, where he got a chance in the quarterfinal against Spartak.
Mikić is a die-hard Partizan fan, and his idol was Novica Veličković. He showed up to his first Partizan training wearing a shirt with Novica’s image, and wore number 12 on his back in his honor.
He was extremely dominant in youth categories. He shone at the 2022 Euroleague ANGT tournament, averaging 15.8 points, 10 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game, and also made a strong impression playing for Serbia at the U17 World Cup.
He moved to the United States as a high school student, completed his senior year at Hamilton Heights in Tennessee, and joined the Florida Gators last summer.
