President of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić today in Belgrade expressed his gratitude to the United States for a $5.1 million donation for the destruction of leftover weapons and assessed that a period of establishing a new era in relations between the two countries lies ahead.

After a presentation of demining work on projects to clear unexploded ordnance at the Innovation and Education Park of the Serbian Mine Action Center in Velika Moštanica, Vučić said that Serbia and the United States “cannot change the past, but they can influence the future.”

“After difficult years, both 1999 and 2008, we are now facing a period of establishing a new era in US-Serbia relations. I think that is very important and very good, and that we can look optimistically at the development of these relations,” Vučić said.

He added that he did not mean only cooperation in the field of demining and the position of KFOR in Kosovo, but all important issues.

“For the first time, it seems to me that by September we could finish the entire story surrounding the Oil Industry of Serbia. Without a certain understanding from the American side, it would be difficult for us to keep that under control without greater consequences,” Vučić said.

He pointed to the great importance of the recently launched strategic dialogue with the United States, which he described as a “turning point and a big and important thing” for Serbia.

Previously, Chargé d’Affaires of the US Embassy in Belgrade Alexander Titolo stated that the United States would provide an additional $5.1 million to support the further destruction of leftover weapons in Serbia, bringing total assistance in this area to more than $34 million.
