The fight to stop the fire on Golo Brdo near Trebinje has been underway since early morning, but the flames, aided by strong winds, have spiraled out of control, and at one point some of the personnel engaged in firefighting were in danger of being surrounded.
Commander of the Trebinje Fire Station Dejan Kašiković said that members of the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina had arrived in the area, near the city, to provide assistance.
According to N1 BiH, the operation began at 5 a.m., and a total of 32 firefighters and members of the Public Institution “Ecology and Safety” are on the ground, with all available personnel, resources, and equipment.
A helicopter belonging to the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina is also participating in the firefighting operation. As reported by N1 BiH, a helicopter from the 1st Helicopter Squadron of the Air Force and Air Defense Brigade of the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina dropped 20 tons of water on the fire over two hours of flight today.
“A difficult night, difficult terrain, but also the determination to defend every endangered meter. The personnel are on the front line and fighting to the maximum, without retreating and without hesitation,” Kašiković said.
The area around Trebinje has been affected for days by a major fire in the Zubci area, which has so far covered an area of 86 square kilometers. Early this morning, an operation was launched to contain the fire line on Golo Brdo above the city and prevent the flames from spreading toward the urban area.
