Students in Serbia have received an extraordinary tribute that reaches far beyond the boundaries of our planet. A scientist announced that he had decided to name a galaxy discovered by his research team in deep space SL3, in honor of Serbia’s students.

“From today, students in Serbia have their own galaxy! GALAXY SL3!” the author of the post wrote on the social network X.

From today, students in Serbia have their own galaxy! GALAXY SL3! 🙂 (1/3) A year ago, using the ALMA and James Webb telescopes, my team and I discovered 17 galaxies in deep space. In honor of the students, I decided to name one of them SL3. Meet it 👇 #StudentsHaveWon https://t.co/J09txzf2HB

As he explained, a year ago his team discovered a total of 17 galaxies in deep space with the help of the ALMA and James Webb telescopes.

“A year ago, using the ALMA and James Webb telescopes, my team and I discovered 17 galaxies in deep space. In honor of the students, I decided to name one of them SL3. Meet it,” the scientist said.

He ended the post with the hashtag #StudentsHaveWon, linking this symbolic gesture to the student movement in Serbia.

The James Webb Space Telescope is one of the most advanced space telescopes, designed to study distant galaxies and the early stages of the universe’s development. ALMA is a large array of radio telescopes in Chile that enables astronomers to study cold gas, dust, and the processes involved in star formation in distant galaxies.

By combining data obtained using these instruments, scientists can investigate the formation and evolution of galaxies in greater detail.

Although the post does not make clear whether the name SL3 has been officially registered or is an informal designation chosen by the researcher, his tribute to Serbia’s students represents a striking symbolic gesture — a message that their struggle has resonated even in the world of astronomy.
