At least 164 people have been killed in the devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela, while more than 700 others have been injured, the country’s interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, announced. According to Reuters, there are fears that the death toll could rise significantly, as rescue teams continue searching through the rubble for survivors.
A large number of buildings have collapsed, and some communities have been almost completely leveled. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) warned that the final toll could be far worse. According to its estimates, there is a 44 percent probability that the number of fatalities will exceed 10,000, while modeling also suggests a 30 percent chance that the death toll could surpass 100,000 people. Official figures from the hardest-hit areas are still being collected.

According to USGS data, the first earthquake, measuring 7.2 in magnitude, struck an area about 160 kilometers west of Caracas. The earthquakes occurred at around 6 p.m. local time and were felt strongly across the country, particularly in the capital.
Interim President Delcy Rodríguez declared a state of emergency and said that more than 20 aftershocks had been recorded following the main earthquakes. Rescue teams are continuously searching through the debris, while extensive material damage has been reported, including the collapse of residential and commercial buildings, power outages, and severe infrastructure damage. Caracas’ main airport has also been closed due to the destruction caused by the earthquakes.
