Coalition “Narodna Srbija”, made up of the People’s Movement of Serbia, New Face of Serbia and Ecological Uprising, announced today in front of the Republic Electoral Commission (RIK) that it will not participate in the snap parliamentary elections to be held on October 25. President of the People’s Movement of Serbia Miroslav Aleksić stressed that, in order to create a referendum-like atmosphere, he will withdraw his list.
President of the People’s Movement of Serbia Miroslav Aleksić said that the “Narodna Srbija” coalition had submitted its “Izbor nadora” electoral list to the RIK with 10,500 certified signatures collected at more than 70 locations across Serbia, and added that, in order to create a referendum-like atmosphere, it would withdraw its list.
“For a year and a half, almost two years now, thanks to the students, and unfortunately following the horrific tragedy that struck us all in the face in Novi Sad and sent the message that we are not safe anywhere in the state of Serbia, citizens have risen up. Everyone has risen up to fight for freedom, to fight for a normal country, to fight for a normal society, for all of us to fight together for the future of our children. “We submitted the list, but the decision of our ‘Narodna Srbija’ coalition is that, in order to create a referendum-like atmosphere, we withdraw our list and make this our contribution to unity. In order to create a referendum-like atmosphere, we have to make certain concessions. I have spoken with representatives of the Student List, as well as with other colleagues from the opposition, and we have made this decision. I call on everyone else to do the same thing so that we can enter the October 25 elections in a different atmosphere.”
Earlier in the day, it was reported that Miloš Parandilović’s New Face of Serbia had decided to withdraw from the joint list, and it was subsequently revealed that Aleksandar Jovanović Ćuta’s Ecological Uprising had made the same decision.
Sources from Nova.rs, meanwhile, claim that the decision not to participate in the elections was made the previous evening and that the initial agreement among party representatives was nevertheless to submit the list to the RIK.
As the reason for such a decision, they cited the fact that their members had collected signatures during the previous period, and that “it would not be right to disregard their work in the field.”
