A total of 43 cases of West Nile fever were registered in Serbia from June 1 to September 13, the Institute of Public Health of Serbia “Dr Milan Jovanović Batut” announced today.

The cases were registered across ten districts: the City of Belgrade (14), South Bačka (nine), Šumadija and South Banat districts (five each), Central Banat (four), North Banat (two), and West Bačka, Rasina, Braničevo and Pomoravlje districts (one case each).

Among those who fell ill, 28 were men and 15 were women, with an average age of 66.6 years.

In the previous week, through September 6, a total of 37 cases of West Nile fever had been registered across nine districts.

According to the Institute’s data from August 30, at that time there had been 18 registered cases of West Nile fever across seven districts.

That was seven more cases than in the previous week through August 24, when, according to the Institute’s data, there had been 11 cases.

The season for this virus in Serbia usually lasts from June to November, while the main vector is the “Culex pipiens” mosquito.
