In the village of Golobok, near Smederevska Palanka, the story of one family stands out as an example of a conscious choice to build a life where the roots are. After years spent in the United States of America, the Milošević family decided to return to Serbia and start a new chapter – not out of necessity, but out of the conviction that right here they could find stability, meaning, and long-term security.

In the yard of the family home in Golobok, Nemanja Milošević today runs his own car repair shop – a tidy and modernly equipped space that clearly reflects his work, dedication, and discipline. Not far from there is the house he built himself, as further proof that with effort and a clear vision, a stable and secure life can be created on one’s own property.

“The feeling that I wasn’t at home never left me”

“I went to America searching for a better life. I worked as an auto mechanic, earned a solid living, but the feeling that I wasn’t at home never left me… I returned in 2019, started a business, and today I can say – I was not wrong,” says Nemanja.

In the yard of the family house, at a table served with homemade cakes, pogača, gibanica, and coffee, sits his wife Ana. Formerly a law student in Belgrade, originally from Čačak, she went to America in 2014 through the “Work and Travel” program. Her journey took her from New York to Hawaii – and as she says, straight to a life choice.

-I met Nemanja in Hawaii. Everything started there, but we very quickly realized that we saw our life here after all – says Ana, her gaze encompassing the yard where their children are growing up.

She speaks calmly, but with clear conviction:

-I returned from America to live the Serbian, not the American dream.

For the Miloševićs, the return was not just a change of address, but a conscious decision about a way of life.

-We didn’t want the city. We wanted a house, a yard, space for the children. To grow up freely, with nature, family on their own land, and speaking their own language. That is what we considered true wealth – she adds.

“It’s nice to go, but it’s nicer to return”

Today, they are proud parents of three sons – Brian, Vuk, and Aleksandar. Today, the boys run carefree through the yard and play with a ball and in their father’s workshop – a picture of a perfect childhood that no longer exists in the West. Without city noise, crowds, and concrete, their daily environment consists of open space, the silence of the village, and work that provides security.

At the end of the conversation, Ana sends a message to young people thinking about leaving the country:

-It is nice to go, see the world, gain experience. But if you know what you want and have an idea of how to achieve it – it is also nice to return. Here, you can build something of your own. For yourself, for your family, and for the future.
