Iran is ready to do “whatever is necessary” to reach a nuclear agreement with the United States, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi said today, ahead of the expected continuation of talks between representatives of the two countries later this week.
“We want to do whatever is necessary to make it happen. We will enter the negotiating room in Geneva with full sincerity and goodwill. If there is political will on all sides, I believe an agreement can be reached as soon as possible,” Ravanchi told Iranian media, as reported by CNN.
The U.S. and Iran have held two rounds of indirect talks in Oman and Switzerland, with a third round expected on Thursday in Geneva.
The Iranian official said that any American attack on Iran would be a “major gamble” and would affect the entire region, reiterating that his country would respond “in accordance with its defense plans.”
Asked whether Iran’s ballistic missile program, or any other issues, would be discussed in the negotiations, Ravanchi said that the “only topic” of the upcoming talks is the “nuclear issue.”
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to brief a group of congressmen this afternoon on the negotiations with Iran, just hours before President Donald Trump delivers his State of the Union address.
