When it comes to American cities, residents of Chicago know very well that their city is among the best when it comes to living without a car.
A new study has confirmed this as well. Chicago was ranked among the best U.S. cities for living without a car, according to research by CoWorking Cafe.
The study analyzed 114 cities across the United States, ranking them based on several criteria, including public transportation availability, bicycle infrastructure, pedestrian safety and other factors that affect quality of life without a car.

Chicago in ninth place
Chicago took ninth place with a total of 40.7 points, leaving behind major American cities such as Pittsburgh, Portland, Oregon, and Minneapolis.
According to the study’s results, 17.7 percent of Chicago residents regularly use public transportation, the sixth-highest percentage among all 114 cities analyzed.
Chicago residents also frequently choose to walk. The study shows that 5.8 percent of residents walk to work.
In addition, the data shows that Chicago has a dense network of train stations, with 1.77 stations per square mile. The “Windy City” also received high marks when it comes to conditions for walking and cycling.
The study’s results thus confirm that Chicago is among the best U.S. cities for those who want to give up their cars and rely on public transportation, walking or cycling in their daily lives.
