THE HAGUE HANDS DOWN SENTENCE: Hashim Thaçi sentenced to 25 years in prison!

Four former leaders of the so-called KLA, Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi, were convicted today before the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague of war crimes committed against at least 385 people. This is a first-instance verdict in the proceedings against them for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Thaçi was found guilty on Count 3 (unlawful or arbitrary arrest and deprivation of liberty, as a war crime), of cruel treatment as a war crime, on Count 7 of torture as a war crime, and on Count 9 of murder as a war crime.

He was acquitted in relation to several cases of war crimes, as well as of persecution, imprisonment and crimes against humanity.

Thaçi was sentenced to a single term of 25 years in prison, with time spent in detention credited toward the sentence.

Other KLA leaders also sentenced

The second defendant, Jakup Krasniqi, was also sentenced to a single term of 25 years.

The third defendant, Kadri Veseli, was sentenced to a single term of 18 years in prison. The fourth defendant, Rexhep Seljimi, was sentenced to a single term of 13 years.

This is a first-instance verdict in the proceedings against them for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Time spent in detention is credited toward the sentence.

As a reminder, Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Seljimi and Jakup Krasniqi were charged before the Kosovo Specialist Chambers with war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during 1998 and 1999.
