Inmates of the Correctional Facility in Kruševac won first place at the Second European Championship for persons deprived of liberty in online chess, while the convicts of the KPZ Belgrade (Padinska Skela) won a high second place.
-The team composed of four talented young men from the Correctional Facility in Kruševac achieved the best possible result in the youth category and they can be proud of their victory – stated the director of the Administration for the Enforcement of Penal Sanctions, Mile Jandrić.
He emphasized that this success has even greater weight if one knows that the inmates are participating for the first time in the Intercontinental competition which gathered 18 countries and 44 teams.
-The inmates showed a desire to acquire new knowledge in that sports discipline and their perseverance, with the support of educators, led them to victory in that competition as well – said Jandrić and reminded that the inmates were first in the world in chess at the championship held in 2022 organized by the World Chess Federation.
As he said, the convicts from KPZ Belgrade (Padinska Skela) won a high second place after their participation in that same competition last year brought them first place.
Female convicts of the KPZ for women in Požarevac, who played in that competition for the first time, and convicts from Zabela won fourth place in the women’s, and men’s category respectively, which, as Jandrić stated, is an exceptionally good result both for themselves and for the chess sections of both institutes.
-Every victory for female and male convicts is precious in order to build the self-confidence they need to make all important life decisions – emphasized the director of the Administration.
Penal-correctional institutions from Serbia have been taking part in the World Online Chess Championship since the first tournament in 2021, which was launched on the initiative of former world chess champion Anatoly Karpov in cooperation with the World Chess Federation within the “Chess for Freedom” project.
