A Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officer was fortunate to survive after a suspect’s bullet became lodged in his protective vest during a fierce exchange of gunfire with police.
Footage of the dramatic chase and shootout shows just how close the violent confrontation, which took place Tuesday in the Boyle Heights neighborhood, came to turning into a deadly tragedy, the New York Post reports.
After the suspect opened fire on officers pursuing him, one bullet struck an officer directly in the chest. Fortunately, the bulletproof vest absorbed the impact and most likely saved his life.
Additional photographs from the scene show bullet damage to an LAPD patrol vehicle, including holes in the side door and windshield.
