The American newspaper Washington Examiner published a text by Israeli-American author Jose Leva Alvarez advocating the possibility of independence for Republika Srpska and calling on the administration of President Donald Trump to reconsider its previous approach to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The text was published on August 20, 2026, under the title “Let Bosnia Break Up: Why Donald Trump Must Recognize an Independent Republika Srpska.”
In the text, Alvarez assesses that American policy toward Bosnia and Herzegovina has been ineffective and argues that multiethnic political models in the Western Balkans are not sustainable in the long term. He presents the Dayton Agreement as a solution that, in his interpretation, brought the armed conflict to an end, while political and social divisions remained.
The author particularly focuses on demographic changes in Republika Srpska. He cites an estimate that around 620,000 people have left the entity in previous years, which he links to its political position within Bosnia and Herzegovina.
One of the key arguments Alvarez uses is the example of Kosovo. He believes that Washington’s approach to Kosovo following its declaration of independence in 2008 could serve as a model for a potential future U.S. relationship with Republika Srpska.
According to the scenario presented by the author, an independent Republika Srpska could become a close partner of the United States, similar to Washington’s relations with certain countries that are not members of NATO.
