SEVEN PEOPLE ARE FIGHTING FOR THEIR LIVES, THERE ARE ALSO DEATHS: Massive fire wreaked havoc near Omiš, engulfing houses and boats! (VIDEO)

A massive fire that broke out in Lokva Rogoznica near Omiš on Thursday evening spread uncontrollably toward the town overnight, threatening houses, cars and boats. At one point, the fire came within just around 50 meters of the center of Omiš, while residents and tourists panicked and fled the affected areas.

The fire broke out around 8 p.m., while strong winds further hampered efforts to battle the blaze. The flames quickly spread between Lokva Rogoznica, Mimice and Omiš, prompting the evacuation of residents and tourists. Around 1,000 people sought safe shelter overnight, while some residents and tourists from the affected areas were evacuated by boat.

The scenes in Omiš overnight were dramatic. The sirens of firefighters, police and emergency medical services continuously echoed through the town, while firefighters defended homes from the flames. Some parts of Omiš were left without electricity, while the Adriatic Highway was closed to traffic in the affected area.

The fire also engulfed buildings, and according to the information available so far, houses, cars, boats and other property were destroyed. Estimates indicate that the fire affected an area of around 1,000 hectares. Chief Firefighting Commander Slavko Tucaković described the situation as one of the most difficult the Croatian firefighting service has faced.

Around 286 firefighters with 93 vehicles took part in extinguishing the fire overnight, with forces arriving from several parts of Croatia. On Friday morning, Canadair aircraft were also deployed, while additional firefighting teams continued working to contain the fire and secure the burned area.

Dozens injured, seven people in critical condition

The consequences of the fire are also severe when it comes to people. According to the latest information, at least 36 people sought medical assistance, while 14 people were hospitalized at Split Clinical Hospital Center. Seven patients are in the intensive care unit and are in life-threatening condition.

During the day, the transfer of four patients from Split to hospitals in Zagreb was also arranged – three patients from the intensive care unit will be transferred to KBC Sestre milosrdnice, while one minor female patient will be transferred to the Zagreb Children’s Hospital.

Body found at the burned site

The situation took on an even more tragic turn after a body was found in the burned area. During an inspection of the site, police found human remains, while the circumstances of the death are currently unknown.

Although the situation was considerably calmer on Friday morning and the fire had been brought under control, firefighters warned that it had not yet been declared contained. Smoke and active hotspots remain in some parts of the burned area, so teams are continuing with extinguishing operations and monitoring the terrain.

New fire breaks out on the northern side of Omiš Dinara

A new fire broke out today near Omiš on the northern side of Omiš Dinara, and one Air Tractor is on the ground, the 24sata portal reports.

The fire moved above the hill and threatened Svinišće and Podašpilje.

Fire Chief Slavko Tucaković announced the arrival of Canadair aircraft. “It should not be anything special,” Tucaković told the portal.

The situation near Lokva Rogoznica is more favorable and the fire is not spreading, but in the area of Kuna Pelješka on the Pelješac peninsula, a fire that broke out this morning remains active. Strong winds are making the situation more difficult, while buildings have been defended for now and there is currently no need for evacuation, the Croatian Firefighting Association announced.

“There is a lot of smoke, but there is no active fire. Firefighters are securing the edges of the fire and the burned houses,” Tucaković said regarding the fire near Lokva Rogoznica, adding that the situation is more favorable.
