More than 12,000 hectares were burned in the Deliblato Sands fire, which was extinguished a month ago, and the restoration of the nature reserve has still not begun, according to local residents. Poaching and the merciless nighttime killing of animals are currently the biggest problems, the Belgrade newspaper Danas reports.
The Deliblato Sands cover an area of approximately 35,000 hectares, of which, according to available data, 32,820 hectares are forested.
Marjana Jeftić, a local resident who has lived in the Sands for 28 years, singled out poaching as one of the biggest problems currently facing the Deliblato Sands.
She told Danas that wild animals that survived the fire and lost part of their habitat are now facing additional threats.
“Poachers are mercilessly killing animals, including red deer and roe deer. I am not sure whether the authorities know how many animals survived the fire and what is happening to them now, because they have lost their habitats,” she said.
