The Chinese customs administration has banned the direct and indirect import of livestock and related products from Poland and Croatia due to the outbreak of bluetongue disease, the General Customs Administration announced today on its website.

Reuters reports that this occurred after Poland and Croatia reported cases found in one Polish province and two Croatian counties to the World Organisation for Animal Health, as reported by the Chinese customs on Monday, Hina reports.

Bluetongue is a viral disease that affects sheep, cattle, goats, and other ruminants, and is spread by the bites of infected mosquitoes. The disease is not dangerous to humans.

According to earlier reports by Hina, bluetongue appeared in the Netherlands in October last year and has since spread to Belgium, Germany, and the Czech Republic, which reported in early September this year that an infected ram showed typical symptoms of the disease, including fever, nasal discharge, difficulty breathing, and loss of appetite.
