The fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria has triggered an intense military response from Israel, including air and ground operations across Syria. Israeli forces carried out around 480 attacks in the last two days, targeting strategic military sites, while the Israeli navy struck the Syrian fleet.
UN criticizes Israeli actions
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant described the operation as a “great success,” while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed the fall of Assad’s regime as a “new and dramatic chapter.”
Netanyahu stated that this development is a result of Israeli strikes against Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran, and that the geopolitical landscape of the Middle East is changing. While Israeli officials view Assad’s downfall as positive due to his ties with Iran and Hezbollah, they are concerned about Syria’s future, according to CNN.
Foreign Minister Eli Cohen said Israel is attacking chemical weapons facilities and long-range missile sites to prevent them from falling into the hands of extremists.

“What follows remains unclear,” Cohen said, adding that Israel is taking all possible steps to ensure its security in this unstable situation.
The UN and a significant part of the international community have criticized Israeli actions, considering them a violation of Syria’s territorial integrity and a further catalyst for instability in the country. Israel has occupied the Golan Heights since 1967, an area at the junction of Israel, Lebanon, and Syria, and has carried out strikes on Syria even during Assad’s rule.
