Blood supplies are critically low, with current reserves sufficient for only two days. For this reason, Sports Society “Red Star” organized another voluntary blood donation drive. Among the donors at the “Rajko Mitić” Stadium was Red Star fan Velimir Radojević, who donated blood for the 100th time.
“I’m glad to be part of this story. Of course, I’m a huge Red Star fan, my heart is full, and I urge many others to follow the path that we and I have taken,” said Radojević.
Radojević was born on March 4, which is also the anniversary of the club’s founding. As he says, Red Star was his motivation both when he donated blood for the first time and now for the 100th time.
“The first time was a long time ago. I think there was a match, so I couldn’t justify my absence from work, and that’s how it all started,” Radojević said.
Most of those at the “Rajko Mitić” Stadium were Red Star fans, but there were also citizens who responded to the appeal from the Institute for Blood Transfusion of Serbia. In a survey, some participants said they had donated blood more than 50 times, while others said their motivation was to help people whose lives are at risk.
Dr. Olivera Savić, director of the Institute for Blood Transfusion of Serbia, emphasized that consistency is important when it comes to blood donation.
“Sport loves records, while the Institute for Blood Transfusion needs consistency. We have already mentioned several times that we need 300 voluntary donors every day. Without those who donate consistently, we would never reach those who have records. It is extremely important for us to have consistency and for people to respond several times a year, rather than only during appeals and donation drives,” Savić emphasized.
Red Star presented Radojević with a jersey bearing the number 100. The Institute for Blood Transfusion of Serbia also warns that there is the greatest shortage of blood type A, type O, and all blood types with a negative Rh factor.
