The Serbian Orthodox Church and its believers celebrate Saint Panteleimon. This renowned physician lived three hundred years after Christ. In addition to the medical skills he acquired through study, Panteleimon also possessed the gift of healing through prayer.
Saint Panteleimon was born in Nicomedia, around 300 years after Christ. After converting to Christianity, in addition to the medical knowledge he had acquired through study, Panteleimon received the gift of healing through prayer and the name of Christ.
Through his power, he healed many sick people, both rich and poor, and it is said that even today he helps those who turn to him in prayer. He refused to renounce Christ and was brutally killed on this day in 304.
For almost 2,000 years, this renowned medical expert has been considered the patron saint of medicine and pharmacy.
The most beautiful, and specifically Russian, church dedicated to this saint is located on Mount Athos. Saint Sava became a monk there.
Many Serbs celebrate Saint Panteleimon as their family patron saint, while many bear names or surnames derived from his name.
Regarding Saint Pantelija, people say that he is a fiery saint, just like Saint Elijah and the Fiery Mary. It is believed to be a good day to start new ventures or set out on a long journey.
Large fairs are held everywhere. Saint Panteleimon is depicted on icons holding a box of medicines in his hands.
