In the town of Sveti Križ Začretje in Croatian Zagorje, investigators continue to shed light on the circumstances of one of the worst family tragedies in recent years, in which a 46-year-old man and his two minor children lost their lives.
According to unofficial information so far, it is suspected that the father killed his seventeen-year-old son and fourteen-year-old daughter, then set fire to the house and committed suicide. Neighbors said they heard three gunshots before the fire broke out, but the police have not yet confirmed the cause of death, writes Zagorje.com.
As reported by Croatian media, the children’s mother had not been living in the family house recently, but with her family. Allegedly, the married couple was in the process of separation, and the issue of child custody had been agreed upon, which is why, according to sources, nothing presaged such a tragedy.
The police announced that during the crime scene investigation on the upper floor of the family house, the bodies of two minors and a 46-year-old man were found.
The statement also notes that it was established that the fire was set in multiple rooms of the house, which further complicates the investigation and reconstruction of the event.
Due to fire marks on all bodies, investigators cannot yet confirm whether the victims died from gunshot wounds or in another manner. The final answer should be given by the results of the autopsy, which will be performed at the Institute of Forensic Medicine and Criminology in Zagreb.
Minister: The family was not in the social welfare system
Croatian Minister of Labor, Pension System, Family and Social Policy Alen Ružić stated that the family was not registered in the social welfare system.
“The family had no contact whatsoever, whether official or advisory, with the social welfare system. Until now, as a system, we had no information about them,” said Ružić.
He expressed his condolences to the mother and family members and said that intervention teams are ready to provide all necessary assistance, including psychosocial and material support.
Day of mourning in the municipality
The mayor of the Sveti Križ Začretje municipality, Marko Kos, announced that upon completion of the investigation, a Day of Mourning will be declared.
“This is a tragedy for the whole town. After the investigation concludes, we expect official information so that we can declare a Day of Mourning. This is a tragedy that has shaken us all,” Kos said.
Police are continuing the investigation, and the circumstances under which the father and two children died will become clearer after the results of the autopsy and the completion of expert evaluations.
