Robert Bush (48), the owner of the funeral home “Legacy” in Hull, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to 67 criminal offenses, exposing one of the most heartless scandals in British history.

For years, he handed grieving families fake and random ashes, in some cases even the remains of animals, while leaving the bodies of their loved ones—brothers, parents, and children—unburied in a horrific state of decomposition. In addition, money was stolen from charities, fake funeral plans were sold, and the defendant even switched off mortuary refrigerators to save on electricity bills.

Shocking Discovery: Instead of Her Baby’s Ashes – A Complete Stranger

The story of Jasmine Beverley best illustrates the scale of the deception. After the funeral of her stillborn son, Sani, Jasmine spent two years polishing the urn containing what she believed were his ashes every day, finding comfort in the grieving process.

However, while she was seven months pregnant with her next child, she received a phone call from the police with devastating news: the ashes in the urn did not belong to her son at all, but to a complete stranger. Police found Sani’s uncremated body abandoned inside the funeral home’s premises. Only afterward was the family able to hold a proper funeral and lay the boy to rest beside his great-grandparents.

“Whoever was in that urn, I loved them as if they were my child,” Jasmine said, adding that learning the truth plunged her into severe depression during her subsequent pregnancy.

The fraud was uncovered completely by chance in March 2024. Bush had traveled to Los Angeles for motorcycle races, leaving seasonal worker Patrick Moore to run the business with one explicit instruction: “Don’t let anyone in and don’t open the door.”

However, when employees from another funeral home arrived to collect borrowed stretchers, they noticed something was wrong. Inside the building, there was complete chaos. Police were soon called to the scene and discovered a horrifying sight: 35 bodies in various stages of decomposition and more than half a ton of human ashes belonging to at least 163 people.

The premises were filthy and poorly maintained, while the personal belongings of the deceased, toys, flowers, and urns were scattered across the floor.

Tattoos and Ash Pendants Made From Complete Strangers

Victim testimonies presented in court in Hull shocked the public. Karen King, whose father’s body was found 10 months after his death, described how she and her mother had made memorial pendants using the ashes Bush had given them.

“I feel contaminated because I wore the ashes of an unknown person so close to my heart,” she wrote in her statement. Another victim revealed that she mixed the ashes of a complete stranger with tattoo ink and had them tattooed onto her body.

Even more tragic is the story of Lucy Ness, who, after suffering a miscarriage in 2021, received an urn that was later found to contain animal remains. Records from the crematorium showed that Bush collected her baby’s remains two days after he had already handed her the fake urn. The whereabouts of her baby’s actual remains remain unknown to this day.

Robert Bush was ultimately sentenced to 20 years in prison, but the victims’ families say that no punishment can erase the pain and trauma he caused them.
