Film director and professor at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts, Stevan Filipović, announced on Instagram that he was attacked last night.
In a video posted on Instagram, Filipović said the attack occurred after he came across a group allegedly vandalizing a protected building in Makedonska Street.
“A group of supporters, members, and paid associates of the ruling party once again vandalized a protected building, a cultural and historical monument at the corner of Makedonska and Nušićeva streets. I took photos of some of them. Just a few minutes later, a guy weighing about 100 kilos wearing a gray T-shirt attacked me and stole my mobile phone,” Filipović said.
He went on to explain that he tried to get his phone back, but at that point five more attackers appeared.
“In front of cameras and about 15 people who were standing in line outside a venue in Makedonska Street, they knocked us to the ground. They started kicking me, then grabbed a metal chair that people had been sitting on and began hitting me with it,” he added.
He said he then lost consciousness.
“Then I came to. The people who were standing nearby helped me and gave me a phone… I have a staple in my leg, a hematoma on my hip, and a concussion, so I’m not allowed to move for 14 days. I also have an injury to my lip,” he explained while showing his injuries.
Filipović said the attackers would not have stopped and that, in his opinion, they would have had no problem killing someone in front of cameras and 15 witnesses.
“They were literally capable of potentially killing a man. And I think what happened to me is nothing compared to the things that have been happening here for the past 35 years, including the last 14 years continuously. I don’t know how much longer we’re going to keep recording this madness and what we’re supposed to do if they think this is how they’re going to intimidate us. They won’t. They may only further radicalize the situation, and they won’t peacefully achieve the removal of this gangster government. Every single one of them will be held accountable.”
He went on to urge people not to be afraid, adding that he would do everything he could to ensure the attackers are identified.
