Branko Ružić*** has resigned as a member of parliament, as he announced he would do after being expelled from the party.***

Ružić shared a document on his Instagram account confirming that he had resigned as a member of parliament.

“Word – dignity. Honor – collegiality,” Ružić wrote on Instagram.

As a reminder, Ružić announced that he would return his mandate after the members of the SPS Statutory Commission decided to expel him from the party.

“I will return my parliamentary mandate to the Party. I believe that is decent, civilized, and socially responsible. I do not want to retain the mandate as a privilege after leaving the party to which I belonged for more than thirty years,” Ružić said at the time.

The SPS previously announced that the Statutory Commission had unanimously adopted the decision to expel him, with all 11 members present, on the grounds that he had “continuously, over an extended period of time, knowingly and deliberately violated the provisions of the Statute, failed to fulfill his obligations to implement the decisions of the party bodies and its unified policy, thereby causing enormous political damage to the SPS.”

Regarding the decision of the party body to expel him from the SPS, Branko Ružić said that he believed the decision formally made within the SPS had, in his deep conviction, been politically made elsewhere, and that the SPS had “agreed to play the role of an SNS branch.” He also said that he considered it his obligation to continue engaging in politics, and that he would return his mandate in the Serbian Parliament to the party.

Sources close to the Socialist Party of Serbia previously said that expelling Branko Ružić from the party would amount to “offering a sacrifice” to Aleksandar Vučić, because, allegedly, the leader of the Socialists, Ivica Dačić, had promised the Serbian president that everything concerning Ružić would be resolved by September 1 at the latest.
