U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that he will soon impose tariffs on goods imported into the United States from the European Union, and he has not ruled out a similar measure against the United Kingdom.
Trump emphasized that the reason for such action is that Europe no longer buys American cars or other products.
“They don’t buy our agricultural products. They buy almost nothing, while we import everything—millions of cars, massive amounts of food, and agricultural goods,” Trump stated.
When asked by the BBC whether there is a deadline for imposing tariffs on the EU, Trump replied that there is no specific timeframe, but that it will happen “fairly soon.”
“Practically every country in the world is robbing the United States. We have trade deficits with almost every country—not all of them, but almost all—and we are going to change that. It’s unfair,” Trump emphasized.
According to him, the U.S. is not currently considering tariffs on imports from the U.K., but he is unsure how the situation will unfold.
“We’ll see what happens. Maybe it will happen with Britain… But it will definitely happen with the EU. That I can tell you, because they are really taking advantage of us—you know, we have a deficit of more than $300 billion,” Trump said.

He added that the U.K. is “not acting properly”, but “things could be smoothed over.”
Trump stressed that he has had numerous meetings and phone calls with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and that the two “get along very well.”
On Saturday, Trump signed an executive order imposing tariffs on goods from Canada, Mexico, and China.
White House Press Secretary Carolyn Leavitt stated on Friday’s press briefing that tariffs on Mexico and Canada will be 25%, while those on China will be 10%, due to illegal fentanyl being distributed in the U.S., which she claimed has led to the deaths of tens of millions of Americans.
