“WHERE IS THE MONEY AND HOW MUCH DOES BELGRADE OWE?”: Šapić pressed for answers about the city’s finances!

The organization Belgrade in Motion said today that the Serbian government had to intervene and transfer an additional 995.8 million dinars to the City of Belgrade because its current liquidity was at risk, even though the Belgrade budget exceeds 200 billion dinars following two budget revisions this year.

“While the Republic is keeping Belgrade liquid with the money of all Serbian citizens, (Mayor) Aleksandar Šapić is nowhere to be seen to explain to Belgraders how their city was brought into this situation,” said Ivan Komarica of Belgrade in Motion, adding that citizens must receive answers to the questions of where the money is, how much Belgrade actually owes, what obligations have been undertaken and who will be held accountable for them.

He said that one of the first steps of the new government following a change of power must be to create the conditions for introducing a temporary governing body in Belgrade and calling new city elections, as well as conducting a full review of all city contracts, public procurements, debts and financial flows.

“Belgrade does not need more money to conceal the consequences of poor management. Belgrade needs new elections, clean accounts and accountability,” Komarica said.
