Dušan Alimpijević made an extremely important move for the future of the national team. As Kurir learns, one of the most talented young Serbian basketball players, Nikola Kusturica, will be on the list of the “A” national team of Serbia for the August qualification matches.
In this way, the coaching staff of the “Eagles” wants to send a clear message that they are seriously counting on the young ace, who has been on the radar of numerous NBA giants for a long time, but… also the national team of Spain.
Kusturica has been living in Barcelona for three years already, and it is an open secret that the Spaniards have been trying to persuade him to wear their jersey for some time. Precisely because of this, the move by the Basketball Federation of Serbia and the head coach has multiple significance.
The invitation to the “A” national team represents a great recognition for the young player, but also a clear signal that Serbia wants to build the future with him. And it will not end with invitations to pearls here. At least one more of Nikola’s teammates from the silver generation from the Mundobasket will follow the same path already from August.
If everything goes according to plan, Kusturica could already train with the best Serbian basketball players during the August gathering, gain valuable experience and take the first step, and maybe even get his first minutes in the national senior jersey.
In the KSS, they recognized how important it is to react on time and that nothing is left to chance. The invitation to Nikola Kusturica is therefore not only a reward for excellent games and huge potential, but also a strategic move with which Serbia wants to preserve one of the most promising players of his generation and a basketball player who is the golden future of the sport “under the hoops”.
In August, Serbia welcomes Iceland (28) and then visits Italy (31). These will be very important matches on the national team’s path to the Mundobasket. With two eventual victories, they would come one step closer to qualifying for the World Cup.
