The under-17 basketball team of Serbia won the silver medal at the World Championship, and one of the team members who stood out is Matija Lukić.
In the defeat against the United States of America, he recorded 16 points, and the public has known about him since last year, when he became the champion of Europe with the cadet selection.
Matija was born and raised in the Netherlands, his mother is Dutch, but he had no dilemma about who he would play for, as he revealed on one occasion.
“I have dreamed since I was little of playing for Serbia. My dad taught me how I should love Serbia, he taught me history and how beautiful Serbia is. That feeling is totally different than when you play for some other country. I wanted that because I love Serbia and I have already met phenomenal teammates. I grew to love playing for this team very much. It is much different for me when I play for the Netherlands than for Serbia, it really is more beautiful for me to play. I have desire and pride when I am on the court when I wear the Serbian jersey,” Lukić said last year for Sportal.
His father Aleksandar is a former basketball player and coach, and he invested a lot in his son’s upbringing.
“From an early age, my dad taught me that. Both when I was baptized, how to be Orthodox, how it needs to be to be a Serb. As a little child, he taught me how to sing the anthem. In the house, always when we watch Serbia, we sing the anthem with him and that’s how I know,” Lukić added.
Last summer, Lukić signed for Zaragoza, when he was only 15 years old, and he has already debuted for the first team.
