Following the public’s intense reaction regarding the death of a baby from Laćarak under still-unexplained circumstances, the Center for Social Work from Sremska Mitrovica issued a statement. Mira S. (20) from Sremska Mitrovica, the child’s mother, was remanded into custody for up to 30 days yesterday.

As a reminder, after an alleged fall down the stairs at her stepfather’s house in Laćarak, the girl sustained severe head injuries on August 29th and was transported in a coma from the General Hospital in Sremska Mitrovica to the Clinical Center of Vojvodina in Novi Sad, where she died on September 12th. Due to the entire case, the child’s mother was arrested, and she was remanded into custody yesterday.

Nova.rs sent an official request to Branislav Vukmir, director of the “Sava” Center for Social Work in Sremska Mitrovica, with questions of public interest: Does the Center possess oral or written reports of physical abuse of the child by relatives, as well as by health workers of the Mitrovica Health Center and the General Hospital in Sremska Mitrovica? Did the Center inform the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Internal Affairs bodies in Sremska Mitrovica about the case of physical abuse of the child, and did the Center’s expert services take measures for the child’s emergency protection?

The concise response from the Center for Social Work states that: “The Center undertook measures within its jurisdiction, and due to the confidentiality of data and the ongoing investigation, as well as the inspection and professional supervision of the work with the family, we cannot disclose information about the minor.”

To recall, one-and-a-half-year-old H.S. from Laćarak died on September 12th at the Institute for Health Protection of Children and Youth in Novi Sad due to severe head injuries sustained, allegedly, from falling down the stairs at her stepfather’s house in Laćarak.

Suspicious injuries

The mother, Mira S. (20), was arrested three days ago on suspicion of a crime against general safety by omission, and she was remanded into custody yesterday for 30 days and questioned at the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Sremska Mitrovica.

Mira S. lived with the baby in Višnjićevo, Buđanovci, and Laćarak, while during that time the child suffered injuries under suspicious circumstances.

The baby had a concussion, then a broken arm, and stomach poisoning, for which she was referred from the Mitrovica hospital for treatment in Belgrade, until that fatal August 29th fall down the stairs, sustaining severe head injuries.

She was sent from the Mitrovica hospital for treatment in Novi Sad, where she never woke up from the coma.
