Singer Darko Lazić and his wife Katarina Lazić suffered a serious traffic accident last night on the highway near Genex, close to the Belgrade Arena. They were returning from the promotion of a new song by her sister Tijana Matić, Darko’s sister-in-law, when they had the traffic accident. A bus and a car were involved in the collision, which left the car completely crushed.
As media reports, Darko Lazić was driving while Katarina was in the passenger seat. The ambulance immediately transported both of them to the VMA (Military Medical Academy), where they were treated and stitched up. Although conscious, they sustained serious injuries, and Darko had to be pulled out of the vehicle. It is further stated that Darko had an argument with his wife, then sped up and in an attempt to overtake a vehicle, he hit the bus with full force, then bounced off it and ended up in the guardrail.
The singer has now spoken out and explained what happened.
“Thank God, nothing terrible, a living head. My car skidded, as you can see on the road, it was rainy on the road, I went to overtake. I didn’t see that the bus was standing parked in the right lane and I couldn’t brake, I released the brake and turned to my side, so as not to hurt Katarina, and I grazed it on my side… Thank God the speed wasn’t high, if it had been, it would have been worse,” he said and added:
“I sustained cuts from the windshield that broke… Who is to blame, that is unknown, I am to blame for driving in the rain, he is to blame for standing still. The important thing is that no one was seriously injured. Katarina only has a small cut on her head from the glass.”
The singer claims he was not intoxicated during the accident.
“If it had been faster, who knows what would have happened. We were returning home, there was no alcohol, there were no illegal substances. I immediately agreed to have my blood taken, everything, so that it wouldn’t be again: ‘He got behind the wheel drunk.’ The weather was like that, it was raining, I didn’t see, a small second of inattention… I’m going to get a tetanus shot and that’s it. All in all, a living head, we move on.”
It is stated that there was a quarrel in the venue where they were the previous night, but the folk singer has now denied those allegations.
“We weren’t arguing. Katarina and I don’t argue.”
He revealed he was worried about his mother, Branka.
“When we left the VMA this morning, I told Andreana to text Branka that everything is okay, because when she wakes up and sees how everything is inflated, that I was practically killed… It happens, we are people…”
When asked if he would continue to drive, or hire a driver, he replied:
“No. Why would I? This happens to everyone. I wasn’t driving recklessly, so that I would lose control… There was water on the road, I didn’t know how to control myself and that’s it. Now if I had been driving maniacally, then you could say it makes no sense and my license should be revoked, but this way we hit water, and oh well,” he concluded.
According to media reports, after the accident, Darko Lazić did not listen to the doctor’s advice to rest, but allegedly went straight to a kafana after the examination at the VMA, where he stayed until the early morning hours.
