The panel of the Higher Court in Belgrade has ruled that Veselin Milić, the former chief of the Belgrade police, will defend himself while at liberty.
The panel determined that all legal grounds for his detention had ceased to exist. The decision was implemented immediately, and Milić was released from the Central Prison in Belgrade.
As a reminder, on May 12, Aleksandar Nešović, known as Baja and an alleged member of the so-called Kekina group, was killed at the “27” restaurant in the Senjak neighborhood. The suspected direct perpetrator is Saša Vuković, known as Boske, who has been in custody since May 14. Nešović’s body was found in a barrel buried near Jarkovac Lake, not far from Inđija. Former Belgrade police chief Veselin Milić was also arrested in connection with the case.
Initially, investigators suspected that the crime had been committed in Milić’s presence and that he, along with three police officers from his security detail, had participated in covering up the crime. However, those criminal charges were later dismissed. Milić is currently charged with failing to report the perpetrator and the criminal offense, namely the murder.
Milić was first questioned on May 15, the day of his arrest, when he presented his defense. The following day, he was ordered into custody for up to 30 days. He was questioned again on June 3 due to new evidence, the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office announced.
Earlier, on May 29, investigators searched Milić’s apartment and official office, 14 days after his arrest.
Following the second questioning, Milić’s attorney, Nemanja Vasiljević, provided the media with part of Milić’s alleged testimony, in which the former Belgrade police chief accused his colleagues of framing him and claimed that the evidence cited in the criminal complaint had never been presented to the prosecutor.
Meanwhile, claims also emerged publicly that Milić had been threatened while in prison. The Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade announced at the time that it had ordered the opening of a case and instructed authorities to take all measures prescribed by law in order to determine the identity of those who had threatened him.
Students participating in the ongoing university blockades described the decision to release former Belgrade police chief Veselin Milić from custody as a “scandalous decision by the Higher Court in Belgrade.”
“More than that—it is a slap in the face to every citizen who has lived for far too long in fear, legal uncertainty, and distrust of institutions. Through its actions, the authorities are sending a mocking message to the people: that the law and justice are equal for everyone, but only as long as you hold a party membership card,” the students stated.
They asked who today can honestly say they have complete trust in the institutions and who can live without worrying about the safety of their family.
“The people will judge the mafia at the elections!” the students declared.
Boske’s Wife Also Released from Detention!
Danka Vuković, the wife of Saša Vuković Boske, who confessed to the murder of Aleksandar Nešović Baja at the “27” restaurant in Senjak, has had her detention replaced with a more lenient measure—house arrest, according to Nova.rs.
