Archpriest-Stavrophore Dusko Spasojevic revealed the details of the vandalism that occurred last night in Zagreb, when an unknown perpetrator broke a century-old stained glass window and the lighting at the entrance to the Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord.
On the Orthodox church that was attacked last night, a stained glass window about a hundred years old was broken, and chairs from nearby cafes were scattered around the church entrance and throughout the yard, stated Archpriest-Stavrophore Dusko Spasojevic.
The vandalism occurred last night between 2 and 3 a.m., damaging the area around the Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord on Zagreb’s Flower Square.
The police confirmed to Hina that one person has been detained. The Zagreb Police Department stated that the circumstances of this act are being determined.
The Archpriest Deputy of Zagreb, Archpriest-Stavrophore Dusko Spasojevic, confirmed that an investigation has been conducted.
“Somewhere around two hours after midnight, an unknown perpetrator came to the temple, broke the stained glass window about a hundred years old at the entrance to the temple, and the lighting that illuminates the entrance area. He brought chairs from nearby cafes and scattered them around the church. Vandalism has been committed that deserves every condemnation, not only when it comes to our church on Flower Square, but any other object where people gather or live,” Spasojevic told the portal of the Croatian weekly Novosti.
He reminded that there had been no similar acts of vandalism for a long time, at least not in Zagreb, and expressed hope that this is an isolated case.
“The attack is ugly and in many ways causes serious concern, and not just for the church as a place of worship. We hope that due attention will be paid to what happened, not only by the police but overall. It is especially ugly that this happened on the night following the commemoration held to mark the anniversary of the breakout of camp inmates in Jasenovac and several pogromist statements against the Serbian Orthodox Church, which makes it even more important that adequate attention be paid to this act of vandalism,” said Milorad Pupovac in front of the church building.
