Twenty-seven years ago, in the night between April 22 and 23, NATO bombed the RTS building and killed sixteen journalists and workers. For the first time in the history of warfare, a media house that had previously been declared a legitimate military target was hit. The RTS building was bombed during a news broadcast at 2:06 a.m.

The journalists and workers who were at their workplace at the time lost their lives: Jelica Munitlak – makeup artist, Ksenija Bankovic – video mixer, Darko Stoimenovski – exchange technician, Nebojsa Stojanovic – master technician, Dragorad Dragojevic – security guard, Dragan Tasic – electrician, Aleksandar Deletic – cameraman, Slavisa Stevanovic – producer, Sinisa Medic – program designer, Ivan Stukalo – producer, Dejan Markovic – security guard, Milan Joksimovic – security guard, Branislav Jovanovic – master technician, Slobodan Jontic – technician, Milovan Jankovic – precision mechanic, and Tomislav Mitrovic – program director.

Only the then-director of RTS, Dragoljub Milanovic, was held accountable for this crime, as he did not follow the orders of the Federal Government to move workers and equipment to a safe location. For NATO, RTS was a legitimate target.

The case was investigated by a special commission of the Hague Tribunal, but it did not recommend that the Prosecution initiate criminal proceedings.
