The lifeless body of Vera Pitulić (41) from Serbia was spotted by random passersby on Interstate I35-E in Texas, who immediately informed the police.
Police officers and firefighters received a call on July 21 at around 8:00 a.m. reporting that the body of a woman with no signs of life was inside a car parked near the highway.
Upon arriving at the scene, police identified Vera Pitulić, and it was immediately clear that the unfortunate woman was the victim of a crime. Using license plate reading technology, police determined that the owner of the vehicle was Vera’s unmarried partner, Donnie Benedict. Police records also showed that Vera’s disappearance had been reported the previous day.
Detectives from the Carrollton and Grapevine police departments then immediately searched Benedict’s home. Police said evidence was collected at the house, allowing them to arrest Benedict right away.
Details of the crime are not yet fully known, and according to initial information, Benedict is suspected of inflicting severe bodily injuries on Vera, which led to her death. The motive for the crime has also not been officially announced, although jealousy has been mentioned.
Namely, Vera and her partner were seen together at a party on July 18. Witnesses said that an argument allegedly broke out between the two. That was the last time Vera was seen alive.
After noticing that she was not responding, her family immediately reported her disappearance to the police, and the official search began on July 21.
“Not in a million years could I have imagined this would happen to her”
Vera moved to the United States more than ten years ago, according to local media reports. In search of a better life, she settled in Texas, where she worked as a teacher at an elementary school.
No one from her circle could have imagined that Vera would meet such an end.
“Not in a million years could I have imagined that something like this would happen to Vera. She was the oldest, she was my support. She was capable of doing anything she set her mind to, and she did it with a smile. You would never have been able to imagine that this woman, who was once a girl, was going through a difficult period. No one in this world deserves what happened to her, especially not her,” Vera’s sister Marijana told local media in the United States.
Vera Pitulić lost her parents at a young age, and she practically raised her two brothers herself, with the help of Marijana, who now says Vera was her role model.
“There was no problem she couldn’t solve. That is how we will remember her,” Marijana said.
Brothers collecting money to bury her in Serbia
Vera’s brothers have now launched a fundraising campaign on the GoFundMe platform to bring Vera back to Serbia. They need to raise $50,000, while slightly more than half of the total amount has currently been collected.
“Our beloved sister, mother, and friend tragically lost her life as a victim of domestic violence. She leaves behind two children, two brothers, and many people who loved her and who will miss her forever. Since her parents have passed away, her brothers are now carrying both the burden of this unimaginable loss and the responsibility of ensuring she receives a dignified final farewell,” the statement said, adding:
“Their greatest wish is to bring her back to her native Serbia, where she will rest among her loved ones. Unfortunately, the costs of transportation and all necessary procedures exceed their financial capabilities.”
