A very disturbing video has spread across social networks in Serbia, showing Kristijan Golubović, who apparently tortured and then left an injured dog in a bathtub. His former partner Kristina Spalević claims that Golubović abused the animal and that the dog later died from the injuries. The Animal Protection Association demanded an urgent investigation by the police, prosecutor’s office, and veterinary inspection. Golubović rejects the accusations and claims he possesses evidence that he will hand over to the police.

Guilt, of course, must be established by the competent authorities, but regardless of the outcome of the investigation, a much larger crime has already been proven before the eyes of all of Serbia: a man with a criminal past, violent rhetoric, and obviously violent behavior, has been turned into a television star, a role model, and an entertainer.

Kristijan Golubović is no accident. He is a product of the last 35-plus years of the Serbian socio-political system, in which a prison record became a recommendation for television, aggressiveness proof of masculinity, vulgarity “authenticity”, and the humiliation of the weaker an entertainment program.

A normal state would hide such a man, not reward him with shows, fees, and a national frequency.

Just a few days before the outbreak of the dog affair, Golubović performed a song on Pink in which he connected Aleksandar Vučić with an open allusion to cocaine consumption. He also had his own show on Red Television, while carrying a tattooed image of the President of Serbia on his arm. It is hard to imagine a stronger symbol of this era than a convicted reality-TV criminal carrying the president on his skin.

That is not an accidental cultural anomaly, but the SNS model.

Vučić’s system did not invent trash, violence, and vulgarity, but it turned them into the infrastructure of power. On the same television stations where reality participants fight, swear, threaten, and publicly humiliate each other in the evening, in the morning the president is glorified and traitors are declared. The message is always the same: the loudest one is right, force is more important than the law, and the leader than the institutions.

REM once waited nearly two years to initiate proceedings against Pink for broadcasting brutal violence in a reality show. In the meantime, Pink, of course, retained its national frequency, while Mitrović strung the public along with claims that he would “shut down reality shows”. Excusing itself with terms such as “regulatory oversight”, the state issued a permit to sell violence as national programming.

The problem is not the poor and unfortunate people who watch such programs. The problem is the government that does not want to help them, but rather to use them politically. A person without a decent salary is offered someone else’s fake luxury. A pensioner fearful of bills is offered the president’s monologue about Serbia as an “economic tiger”. A humiliated citizen is offered the “pleasure” of watching someone who is humiliated even more. Anesthesia for misery.

Reality TV is not just bad television, reality TV is a school of social behavior in which children learn that money and fame are not achieved through knowledge, work, and character, but through cursing, threats, adultery, and fists. Kristijan Golubović is the ideal professor of such a school: loud, aggressive, and rewarded for decades precisely for everything every decent person would be ashamed of.

If it is proven that the dog was tortured or killed, Golubović must answer before the law; however, if we have learned anything from the years of Vučić’s rule so far, Golubović will at best answer before the cameras. When justice’s turn comes one day, the entire system that created, promoted, and sold him as a hero for years must also find itself in the dock alongside Golubović.

When the state turns a bully into a star, it is not a question of if, but when the victim of that violence will be someone who cannot fight back. A woman. Sometimes a child. And sometimes a little dog in a bathtub. That is why it is important for the students to win.
