The son of General Ratko Mladić, Darko Mladić, stated today that he hopes the decision of the court in The Hague regarding the early release of General Mladić will be positive and noted that General Mladić’s condition remains unchanged and poor.

Darko Mladić told RTS that in yesterday’s telephone conversation, Ratko Mladić managed to say only a few words.

He stated that the president of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, Graciela Gatti Santana, should finally make a decision in the coming days regarding the request for the urgent release of Ratko Mladić for treatment in Belgrade.

When asked what kind of court decision he expects, Darko Mladić replied that he hopes the decision will be positive this time.

“Now all doctors agree that he is literally at the end of his life. She wouldn’t be releasing him for treatment, but effectively, she would be releasing him to die in Serbia, not to be treated. He is an incurable patient, at the end of his life. This is something all doctors have agreed upon,” stated Darko Mladić.

He added that last summer, when they sent a humanitarian request for release, the court president Graciela Gatti Santana said that for release, Mladić needs to be acutely and terminally ill, which, as he stated, is now the situation.

“We had several submissions; on April 10th, he suffered his second-to-last stroke, and then another one occurred last Saturday. We first sent our doctors through an emergency procedure because, what was obvious to us, the family, over the phone, their doctors are underestimating the situation. At first, they did not diagnose a stroke, but some milder forms. Our doctors established that it was a stroke and that the situation is very serious,” stated Darko Mladić.

He added that after that, they submitted a request for early release for humanitarian reasons because it is obvious that Ratko Mladić is at the end of his life.

“Our fundamental request is for them to let him die in Serbia. That is the essence of our request,” stated Darko Mladić.

The former commander of the Army of Republika Srpska, General Ratko Mladić, has suffered several strokes, has serious cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, neurological damage, as well as kidney problems, which is why he has been hospitalized multiple times and subjected to various medical and therapeutic procedures, including surgical interventions on his heart and leg.

Since 2024, he has been in the detention hospital in The Hague, where he is under palliative care due to his severe health condition.
