MEMORIAL HELD FOR RATKO MLADIĆ: Family and friends bid farewell to the late general, Serbian government minister also attended!

A memorial service for the death of convicted General Ratko Mladić was held at the Serbian Army House in Belgrade from 12:00 p.m. The memorial gathering in Belgrade represents the first official farewell to Mladić, who died in a detention hospital in The Hague on August 27.

Guests attending the memorial, as well as friends and family of Ratko Mladić, gathered outside the Army House before the ceremony.

Among those present were war veterans with disabilities, fighters from Republika Srpska, as well as politicians. Serbian Justice Minister Nenad Vujić also attended the memorial.

Speeches held

Speeches were delivered at the Army House by Colonel General Branko Krga and Russian historian and academic Jelena Guskova. Radan Ostojić, Minister of Labour and Veterans’ and Disability Protection of Republika Srpska, also delivered a speech. General Živomir Ninković addressed those present at the end.

“We were brigade commanders at the same time. He taught lessons in both theory and practice. He showed particular concern for the soldiers,” Colonel General Branko Krga said during the memorial.

Radan Ostojić, Minister of Labour and Veterans’ and Disability Protection in the Government of Republika Srpska, delivered a speech at the memorial.

“First and foremost, I have been given the privilege of saying farewell to General Mladić today on behalf of my comrades-in-arms, the Serbian people and Republika Srpska in this speech. This is a privilege, but it is also an obligation and a task that we fighters can compare to wartime duties,” he said.

It should be recalled that Ratko’s son, Darko Mladić, previously announced that the funeral would be held on Monday, September 7.

Ratko Mladić’s body will be on display on Monday, September 7, at the Church of St. Luke in Vidikovac from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The funeral service will begin at 12:35 p.m., after which the funeral procession will head toward Topčider Cemetery, where Ratko Mladić will be buried.

The Hague verdict

He was born on March 12, 1943, in the village of Božinovići, in the municipality of Kalinovik. He graduated from the Military-Industrial School in Zemun and from the Military Academy and Command and Staff Academy as the top student in his class. He began his military career in 1965 in Skopje, where he advanced to become head of training of the 3rd Military District of the Yugoslav People’s Army.

At the beginning of January 1991, he became deputy commander of the Priština Corps, and at the end of June of the same year he went to Knin.

The Hague Prosecutor’s Office indicted him in 1995 for war crimes in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and he was arrested on May 26, 2011, in Lazarevo near Zrenjanin, after which he was extradited to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.

The trial against Mladić began at the Hague Tribunal on June 3, 2011, and in July 2022 he was sentenced to life imprisonment for genocide and crimes against humanity in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Ratko Mladić died on August 27 at the prison hospital in Scheveningen.
