Following Đakovo Croatia’s convincing 4–0 victory over Marsonia in Round 9 of the Third Croatian Football League East, Pazarište Stadium became the scene of a shocking and serious incident rarely seen on sports grounds.
The visiting team’s coach, Veldin Karić, a former Vojvodina footballer, was physically attacked and seriously injured immediately after the match.
The incident took place in the corridor outside the locker room approximately 10 to 15 minutes after the final whistle. According to available information, Karić was approached by the father of one of Marsonia’s young players, who was dissatisfied with his son’s playing time and status within the team.
Karić calmly told him that selecting the team was entirely the coach’s responsibility and that the boy would get his chance when the time was right. He also added that the young player needed to continue training and working hard.
The father initially appeared to calm the situation down — he hugged the coach and said everything was fine, only to suddenly deliver a powerful punch that literally knocked Karić out.
The punch triggered widespread confusion, and the attacker immediately fled the corridor. When Marsonia’s players came out, they were confronted with a horrific scene: the coach was lying on the floor in a pool of blood, his nose visibly broken, while a club representative stood beside him and immediately rushed to his aid.
Karić was transported by ambulance to the hospital in Đakovo for further medical treatment. According to initial unofficial information, a broken nose is suspected, an injury classified as serious bodily harm. The police quickly located and detained the attacker, while the exact circumstances and legal classification of this unprecedented assault will be established once the criminal investigation is complete.
